The Seattle Mariners have acquired All-Star right-handed starter Luis Castillo in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds in commutation for a bundle of elevation prospects that included Noelvi Marte, Edwin Approach and Levi Stoudt.

The total bargain with the Reds includes infielders Marte and Arroyo, and right-handed pitchers Stoudt and Andrew Moore.

Castillo, 29, was widely viewed every bit the all-time starting pitcher bachelor on the merchandise market ahead of Tuesday'due south deadline. Castillo made his second All-Star team this season and has posted a 4-4 tape with a two.86 ERA with 28 walks and ninety strikeouts in fourteen starts for the Reds. This month, Castillo has a one.93 ERA with 7 walks and thirty strikeouts in four starts.

"We come across Luis Castillo every bit an bear upon, height of the rotation starter who'south currently on top of his game," full general managing director Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. "Our goal remains to play in the postseason, at present and in the years to come. Nosotros believe adding Luis is a big footstep in that direction."

Dipoto said the Mariners had spoken with the Reds most Castillo dating back to terminal yr prior to the MLB lockout. They also completed a merchandise with the Reds in March that brought outfielder Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez to Seattle with discussions on Castillo occurring besides.

"We call back he's one of the best pitchers in the league and we understood as far back as last year's G.One thousand. meetings that the potential existed for him to be available and we wanted to be in play should that happen," Dipoto said after the trade.

The Mariners needed another starting pitcher in their rotation as rookie George Kirby is on an innings limit this season. Kirby threw 67 ⅔ innings last year for High-A Everett and Double-A Arkansas as he climbed through the Mariners arrangement. He's already at 69 ⅓ innings pitched for Seattle this year. Throw in 24 ⅔ innings thrown for Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma and Kirby is at 94 innings pitched for the season, which is the most he'due south ever thrown in a twelvemonth.

"We practice want to make sure that George stays on a regular turn and continues to contribute," Dipoto said. "He'due south been such a big part of what nosotros've done to this betoken and he'south a big function of what we'll practise moving frontward. For u.s.a., it's of import that we practice what we can to help him complete a 162-game season because he'southward never experienced that before."

Per Baseball America, in both 2019 and 2021 Castillo'southward changeup was voted by managers, scouts and executives as the best in the National League. In 2019, he became the 3rd pitcher in MLB history to record 3-plus consecutive starts with at to the lowest degree 8 strikeouts and no more than than two hits allowed, joining Rube Marquard for the 1911 New York Giants and Randy Johnson for the 1997 Mariners.

Since he fabricated his Major League debut, Castillo ranks 9th in the majors in games started (137) and eighth in strikeouts (860). Castillo has fabricated 137 starts in vi years with the Reds, posing a 44-53 record with a 3.62 ERA with 287 walks and 860 strikeouts.

"He's washed that pitching in Great American Ballpark," Winker said of Castillo and the hitter-friendly ballpark in Cincinnati. "He's aristocracy and he'due south but getting better. … He'due south e'er gotten amend twelvemonth after yr after year. It's another guy that we accept that heaven's the limit for and I'm excited that he'south here."

Castillo is under contract through next flavor. His normal rest would have lined him upward to pitch on Tuesday. He is likely to brand his Mariners debut either Tuesday or Wednesday against the New York Yankees.

"He's a summit of the rotation starting bullpen and he'll take his turn when his plow comes," Dipoto said.

To acquire Castillo cost the Mariners a meaning price. Marte, Arroyo and Stoudt were the organization's first-, tertiary-, and fifth-rated prospects, per MLB.com. Baseball America had the trio ranked as the first-, second- and tenth-best in the arrangement.

"We've washed so much work over the course of these final three-and-a-one-half years or so and Noelve and Edwin and Levi and Andrew, all of these kids they are so much a part of what we have been building toward. And ultimately we knew there would come up a time where nosotros felt like it was our fourth dimension to have a stride forward. This is why you build stiff, deep organizations and the talent that these guys bring to the table allowed united states to go become a guy we thought was the acme bullpen on the market."

Castillo solves the Mariners' starting pitching demand. The demand for aid on the offensive side continues to be besides. Dipoto said it's tougher to see where an answer to that question could come up from before the deadline.

"On the offensive side, we're open to opportunity simply it'southward much harder to meet where that is going to happen with [Haniger] on his mode back and we believe he is closer than far away now and actively playing," Dipoto said. "Nosotros view Mitch and the add-on of Kyle Lewis last week equally the move that our criminal offence needed. That being said, we'll keep our ear to the street in the event that opportunity exists, it'southward but a little tougher to see where that might be."

Marte, 20, hit .275 with 62 runs scored, 19 doubles, 15 home runs, 55 RBI, 43 walks and 13 stolen bases in 85 games with Loftier-A Everett this flavour. In 3 small league seasons, Marte is batting .282 with 209 runs scored, 65 doubles, vi triples, 41 dwelling runs, 180 RBI, 131 walks and 54 stolen bases in 257 career games. Marte has been a shortstop in the pocket-sized leagues but could project to a corner infield spot.

Approach, who turns 19 next month, hit .316 with 76 runs scored, 19 doubles, seven triples, xiii home runs, 67 RBI, 35 walks and 21 stolen bases in 87 games with Low-A Modesto this year. In ii minor league seasons, Arroyo is batting .299 with 92 runs scored, 21 doubles, seven triples, 15 home runs, 77 RBI, 45 walks and 25 stolen bases in 108 career games.
